REFERENDUM VOTE RESULTS

The Meskwaki Tribe held a Referendum Vote on April 1, 2008 to allow Tribal Members to consider the question of whether alcohol should be sold at the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel, located on the Meskwaki Settlement near Tama, Iowa.  By a significant margin, the voting members of the Tribe approved the proposed sale of alcohol.

The sale of alcohol will be limited to the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel operation, and does not include any other Tribal businesses on the Settlement. Federal law requires that sales of alcohol on tribal lands be strictly regulated under Tribal law and that the Tribe’s regulatory structure be no less strict than that of the State where the Tribe is located.  According to the Tribe’s Chairman, Adrian Pushetonequa, the next step for the Tribal Council is to consider and adopt a Tribal ordinance or code permitting and regulating the sale of alcohol by the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel.  Thereafter, the Tribe will seek federal approval for the law and will also obtain any necessary State of Iowa permits.  Due to regulatory requirements, the Council anticipates that the first date for alcohol sales at the Casino will be at least six months and possibly up to one year from the date of the Referendum.  The current ban on alcohol at the Casino and Hotel will remain in effect until all approvals and permits are acquired.

The Tribal Council initiated the alcohol referendum in response to the ever-increasing competition faced by the Tribe’s casino operation.  Currently, the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel is the only gaming operation in the State of Iowa that does not offer alcohol service to its guests. Casino management believes being able to offer alcohol service will strategically place the casino operation in a more competitive position in the convention, entertainment and tour and travel industry.

The Meskwaki Tribe recently expanded its casino operation to include a new hotel wing, the Winding Stream Day Spa, the Prime Cut—a fine dining steak house, and 11,000 square feet of convention space.  The Meskwaki Tribe feels that the new components of the business operation combined with the approval to serve alcoholic beverages will enable the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel to offer a competitive service that dining, gaming and convention patrons have come to expect from a full service gaming and hotel facility.

The Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel is a wholly owned business enterprise of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa (the Meskwaki Tribe).
