REFERENDUM VOTE RESULTS
The
Meskwaki Tribe held a Referendum Vote on April 1, 2008 to allow Tribal Members
to consider the question of whether alcohol should be sold at the Meskwaki
Bingo Casino Hotel, located on the Meskwaki Settlement near
The
sale of alcohol will be limited to the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel operation,
and does not include any other Tribal businesses on the Settlement. Federal law
requires that sales of alcohol on tribal lands be strictly regulated under
Tribal law and that the Tribe’s regulatory structure be no less strict than
that of the State where the Tribe is located.
According to the Tribe’s Chairman, Adrian Pushetonequa,
the next step for the Tribal Council is to consider and adopt a Tribal
ordinance or code permitting and regulating the sale of alcohol by the Meskwaki
Bingo Casino Hotel. Thereafter, the
Tribe will seek federal approval for the law and will also obtain any necessary

Tribal Council initiated the alcohol referendum in response to the ever-increasing
competition faced by the Tribe’s casino operation. Currently, the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel is
the only gaming operation in the State of
The
Meskwaki Tribe recently expanded its casino operation to include a new hotel
wing, the Winding Stream Day Spa, the Prime Cut—a fine dining steak house, and 11,000
square feet of convention space. The Meskwaki
Tribe feels that the new components of the business operation combined with the
approval to serve alcoholic beverages will enable the Meskwaki Bingo Casino
Hotel to offer a competitive service that dining, gaming and convention patrons
have come to expect from a full service gaming and hotel facility.
